Dale and I and our neighbors Greg and George all decided to go camping up at Blue Jay campground in the Cleveland national forest. It is about an hour drive from Long Beach up in the Santa Ana Mountains in Orange County. It was a Friday and I was off work early, so we packed up the SUVs and high tailed it up the Ortega highway to the mountains. We did not realize that there was road work on the windy mountainous Ortega Highway, and the road actually closes at 8:30pm to all traffic. We made it with only 10 minutes to spare to the top of the mountain before the road was closed, and found our way to the campsite just as it was getting dark. We set up tents, and cooked a great meal and went to bed after a nice evening around the campfire. The weekend was warm, up to 96 F and sunny, but there were some nice cool breezes and we had plenty to drink and keep us cool. We also took a run into the nearby town of Lake Elsinore for some more ice and supplies. We also tied up our nice solar shower to a tree and we all had refreshing showers in the evening before our dinner. It was very dry and dusty, so no matter where you turned, you got dirty. We had a 2nd evening of a great fire, meal and meal around the campfire, and went to bed for a nice rest under the stars. We packed up on Sunday morning after a hearty breakfast and headed back to Long Beach. It was a perfect weekend get away that made is seem like it was a mini vacation. It was fun, and back home in time to do some laundry and dinner.

So they allow campfires in August? I'm thinking of going up tomorrow.
One should always check on the Cleveland National Forest Website first for the Forest fire Danger level and if fires are banned. It can change overnight, but when we were there it was ok, in the fire ring only.

Did you have any problems with wild underage parties at Bluejay? We were just there and were inundated with them. They were not campers but 20+ kids would arrive between 11pm-12am and have insane parties until 6-7am in the morning and we could not get the rangers or sherriff dept. to help at all.
I can certainly see that would be a problem. We only had some campers that came in quite late, and were partying and drinking, and being loud, but they all either went to bed or passed out by 1AM, so I guess we were lucky. By your comments, it seems to be a place where people that age feel they are free to disrupt others enjoying the tranquility and peace and quite away from the city.
We were just there today. It was fucking cold as fuck and windy! and yeah we thought it was a KKK rally cuz of the loud loud noise
That was going to be my question. What about the local punk kids and partying? It's a shame that most, if not all, of the local campgrounds are overrun by the local gangbangers and other trouble makers. It's typical for any campground near the big city. I'd sure love to try this place out sometime, but I am worried that I will have to deal with these puky kids. I guess it's worth the extra 3 hours drive to go up around Lone Pine on 395, to get away from the trouble makers.
Your blog keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now keep it up!
